Individually Attested Pattern for Checky Or and Argent, a Chief Or

Target IAP is poor-contrast checky field with poor-contrast chief, extrapolating from poor-contrast chiefs on poor-contrast multipart fields.

The source material is Insignia pontificum Romanorum et cardinalium, Parts 1-15, BSB Cod icon 266-280, Italy, 1550-1555.

Some preliminary comments about the blazons presented:

"Barry lozengy"

I'm blazoning DU BUBALIS as "barry lozengy" for lack of a better term.  It may, however, be a lazy rendering of vairy despite good renderings of vairy being shown elsewhere.

"Chief" vs "Per fess"

There are a number of items I've blazoned as having a chief -- frequently a chief of allegience, though some chief candidates seem to be chiefs of their own accord (ANT_ IACOBUS seems clearly so). Trusting such fields are in fact charged with chiefs rather than simply per fess requires looking at some per fess fields. Therefore, I've included some arms that are clearly per fess, having a divided field with a single charge overlaying the whole:

DE AVERARIA: Per fess Or and argent, an eagle displayed sable.

DE CERNUSCHULO: Per fess Or and gules, a plant vert [and sable].

DE PRATO: Per fess Or and vert, and eagle displayed sable.

DE PREDA VECA: Per fess sable and argent, a horse rampant counterchanged.

Conveniently, DE AVERARIA is side-by-side with DE BASIS, which seems a close relation to DE BAZIIS. The difference between the fess line and the depth of the potential chief are notable here. These differences are at times small, but on the whole, the fess lines seems to ride a bit lower than those of prospective chiefs of allegience, which provide a basis (as it were) for what constitutes a chief in these sources.

Overall, I'm confident that at least the instances of "Or an eagle displayed sable" are traditional chiefs.  I'm also confident that most of the others are in fact chiefs, hinting at a pattern of field primary armory with charged chiefs.

Chief sharing tincture with multipart field

The following is relevant to the question of a chief sharing a tincture with a multipart field:

Philipp Hartrat. Device change. Lozengy sable and argent, a cross vert and a bordure sable. Commentary raised the issue of whether or not charges can share a tincture with a multiply-divided field. While there are several precedents allowing multiply-divided ordinaries to share a tincture with a single-tinctured field, there are no precedents addressing the reverse. Ordinaries, generally having simple outlines, are far easier to identify than other charges when sharing a tincture with the field. Therefore, as long as identifiability is maintained, we will register single-tinctured ordinaries sharing tincture with a multiply-divided field, and multiply-divided ordinaries sharing tincture with a single-tinctured field. His previous device, Or, a centaur passant reguardant sable playing a straight trumpet gules and on a point pointed sable a cross moline Or, is released. [Registered Nov 2011, via Atlantia]
